How Many Games Is Too Many?

Some NHL teams are looking at the number of games played by individual players, particularly that ever important position of goalie, and looking to ensure they have backups fit and ready.

The San Jose Sharks and Buffalo Sabres have already given the backup goalies a run this year following last seasons massive 77 and 76 game hauls by their respective goalies.

There must be a point where you give your players a break. Having to play 77 games is probably not that arduous for a young and fit player. However, as they get older is certainly starts to have a telling effect. Careers can be cut short because of overuse in the early days.

By regularly using a backup goalie, particularly in games where you feel you have a distinct advantage gives you mainstream goalie a break and the chance to heal any minor injuries. It is not just the goalies of course. Every position needs some consideration. Depending on how many minutes they spend on the ice each game and how many consecutive games they play, it is often the case that active team members also need a small break.

Teams that play backup players on a regular basis also know that if their regular player, in this case the goalie, loses form or suffers an injury, they will have a reliable, competent and match fit replacement ready to fill the shoes of the regular goalie. It does beg another question however, are there too many games for athletes in the modern sporting arena. What do you think?
